Note from the Editor

Every year I join a group of car nuts on an adventure. We travel, along with close to 100,000 other UK petrolheads to the Circuit de la Sarthe, to spectate at the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. This year was my third trip and the best yet. I know quite a few people that have considered going but not taken the plunge, hopefully my story in this issue will help convince them (and you) that it is well worth the trip. In fact, right from my first day on my first trip I realised that I was set to return annually. The atmosphere is incredible, the action on track is dramatic as any racing I’ve ever witnessed. There are twists and turns as unexpected breakdowns and crashes mount up over the round the clock racing event. My advice is simple, go once and you’ll never look back!

The first of three cars we are featuring in this months magazine are the Porsche 911 GT3, 997 series. We are covering both generation 1 and 2 cars in this article, even though there was a significant change in the engine and power output. Both are intoxicating track focussed drivers cars, which have been slowly increasing in value. The manual gearbox and sublime steering make this a hit on most collectors lists.

Our second feature car is the Subaru Impreza 22B STi. This car is nothing short of a legend, since release all 400 examples were coveted. We have previously featured the car and thought it was worth a revisit as prices since our review have now doubled and look as though they will continue to balloon. Why would this be? For many that love rally homologation cars, the 22B represents the most modern direct reference to a motorsport great. The extreme handling setup may not suit UK roads as well as other Subaru Impreza models, but the feeling of specialness of the package makes up for that.

The third car is the 22B’s arch rival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition. The rally car it was built to celebrate battled it out with the Subaru and had great success during the World Rally Championship. Just like the 22B it is also a highly prized piece of motoring machinery that is more collectible than ever.
